Create an app to avoid driving drowsiness

Drowsiness is responsible for three out of ten traffic accidents

Samsung has announced the launch of the free application Samsung Co-pilot for smartwatches, compatible with different manufacturers. A software that has been designed to detect and alert in advance possible situations of risk at the wheel.

According to official data provided by the South Korean in a statement, the drowsiness behind the wheel is a factor involved, directly or indirectly, in between 15% and 30% of traffic accidents that occur in Spain.

The dream is one of the biggest enemies at the wheel because it makes it impossible to react until it is too late, which is why many of the accidents with this origin have "serious or very serious" consequences.

With Samsung Co-Pilot, the company plans to "help reduce" traffic accidents caused by fatigue or drowsiness behind the wheel.

Professional drivers are more prone to drowsiness because they spend more hours behind the wheel, Samsung explained. The usual recommendations to combat sleep include rest well before the trip, avoid dangerous hours or long journeys, or rest every two hours or every 200 kilometers traveled.

Added to these tips is the incorporation of technology through the Samsung Co-Pilot application, to prevent drowsiness behind the wheel and reduce the number of accidents related to this risk factor.

This app for smartwaches has been developed jointly with the research group led by the professor of the Higher School of Engineering and Technology of the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) Sergio Ríos. Samsung co-pilot learns from the user's driving style to improve the accuracy of warnings. To do this, first record the vital signs of the driver at rest. In addition, it also stores a contact from the user's calendar to use in case of emergency, by means of a quick call in situations that require it.

From the profile configured, and linked to the movements of the driver's arms, the application algorithm will analyze the sensor data of the device to detect deviations in the previously registered patterns, and interpret that the person is in a state of drowsiness. In this case, it will issue an alert using the vibration of the device.
